Rishi Sunak has won the leadership contest of the Conservative Party. This win will see him becoming the United Kingdom’s new prime minister.

The former prime minister Liz Truss resigned last week after her disastrous tax cuts plans and policy U-turns plunged the markets into chaos.

Sunak, who won the contest of the ruling party on Monday has admitted that the country is faced with serious economic challenges, calling for urgent stability and unity.

In his first speech since winning the contest, Sunak said:
“There is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge,” Sunak said. “We now need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together.”

The task to unite the country which is also going through a tough economic downturn now lies on the shoulders of the former finance minister, Rishi Sunak.

During the contest, Sunak had gotten about 150 votes, compared to his only challenger, a former Defence minister and leader of the House of Commons, Penny Mordaunt.
Mordaunt, who had gotten 30 votes had withdrawn from the contest just minutes before the winner was to be announced.

Mordaunt and Sunak had lost to Truss in a contest to appoint the successor to the then-former prime minister Boris Johnson.

Sunak, 42, who will be the first Hindu to become UK prime minister will also become the UK’s first leader of color and also the youngest prime minister the country has had in the last 200 years.
