Rapper Lil Baby has acquired a limited-edition Virgil Abloh-designed Maybach which is set to hit the market next month. The Rapper’s luxury Mercedes is the first of the 150 units produced for the model.
The car is named Maybach by Virgil Abloh, after the late fashion designer, Virgil Abloh who had previously worked on Mercedes Benz’s Geländewagen car and had passed away last year following a private battle with cancer at the age of 41.
The new car is a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 model and was designed by Abloh before his death Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz’s chief design officer also partnered in the design of the luxury car.
Lil Baby in an Instagram post showcased the car with the caption ‘Virgil’ Maybach So Sweeeet.”
Describing the car, Wagener said; “As Project Maybach was a show car, we had complete creative freedom, allowing us to collaboratively concept what the future of electric travel could look like,”
“Due to production requirements, we had to take a different approach to the design of the Mercedes-Maybach limited-edition S-Class.”
He also spoke on the black and chrome color of the car; “Project Maybach’s iconic two-tone color-way does [remain] and it is the most striking design element connecting the limited edition to Project Maybach,”
“It is expertly carried through both the vehicle’s interior and exterior,” he continued.
“While the upper part of the vehicle is lacquered in a glossy obsidian black, the lower part, side flanks, and special forged rims are painted in a sand hue.”
Speaking on why this model is not electric, but petrol-powered, Wagener stated that future Maybach will be electric.
“Mercedes-Maybach is fully committed to an electric future and, whilst Maybach by Virgil Abloh is a very limited edition run that launches before this capability is offered, we will be bringing the first fully electric Mercedes-Maybach model to the markets in 2023,” Wagener explained.
