India Becomes World’s Most Populous Nation

By Blessing Enechojo Abu

India has surpassed China to become the world’s most populous nation. With a population of 1.428 billion, India has slightly more people than China with a population of 1.425 billion according to the UN world population dashboard.

China’s population had shrunk in 2022, the first time since 1960 despite the fact that its “one-child policy” ended in 2021.

The “one-child policy” which had been reimposed in 2016 due to overpopulation fears ended in 2021 after they started allowing couples to have three children. This did not in any way show any significant increase in the population as birth rates continue to plunge thereby reducing workforce ages.

Pew Research Centre states that India’s population has grown by more than 1 billion since 1950.

India is projected to be one of the fastest-growing economies in the world in the coming years, as half of its population is under the age of 30.

By mid-2023, the global population is expected to have hit 8.045 billion.
